  •  Low level marijuana arrests means less than an oz (19+ / 0-)

So NYC is spending at least $1600/oz to confiscate weed off the street. That must be some damn good weed. They'd probably make a bigger dent in the amount of pot smoking if they simply bought up all the marijuana they could find and incinerated it.

Cop: you got any weed on you, Joe?
    Joe: uh, well, yeah... some...
    Cop: how much?
    Joe: about an ounce...
Cop: What did you pay for it?
    Joe: $75.
Cop: I'll give you a hundred for it.
Joe: Really? Cool! Here you go!

Pusher: Sorry, Joe, I'm all out. Damn cops are buying up all the product. I might have more on Tuesday...
    Joe: Awww, maaaannnn!

Joe spends his little windfall on a burger and fries, two cups of designer coffee, new socks, sees a movie, treats a couple of his friends to a beer in the local bar, buys some groceries and does his laundry.

Multiply Joe by 40,000 per year, and neighborhood businesses have to hire more people, employment goes up, tax revenue goes up, cops have a lot more time to work on serious crime, so the neighborhood is safer. Tourists and locals find safer neighborhoods to be more attractive and spend more time (and money) out and about, and newspapers run stories on the New New York Renaissance.
