    huge homes replacing farmland, the government only preserved trails because they had to, expanding highways, and exurbia is even more car dependent than suburbia.

    I read an article about oil in the Atlantic in the 1960's proving how the oil industry owns the government and that goes back to the very beginning of the discovery of oil and the proliferation of the automobile. The 20th century was the oil boom and it is continuing into the 21st.

    The oil industry in its beginning days sent politicians to Washington, it was a revolving door. They had legislation that guaranteed tax breaks like "the oil depletion allowance."

    Here's a book The Geography of Nowhere by James Howard Kunstler that speaks to the subject of suburbia and exurbia.
