  •  Question about Osprey... (8+ / 0-)

I LOVE this bird.  They are like my good luck charm and I think they are beautiful.  I see them on my hikes around local rivers in Oregon.  But, I have a question that keeps irritating my brain...

    Pronounced "OS-PRAY"  or "OS-PREE"  ???

Anyone know?  Clearly, it doesn't really matter but I wonder about it.

They nest here, just south of you, on Humboldt Bay, and since it is sunny here today, I may go over to the parking lot at the Samoa Cookhouse and see what is going on at those nests, if anything. Funny thing is, I grew up in Oregon, and I can't remember seeing them until after I left the state. I did find some info online about Oregon Ospreys, so I know you do see them up there. Just a matter of raising consciousness, no doubt.
Here, in the US, ospreys may have differing plumage that distinguishes males from females, but in northern Europe, that does not always hold true. Here are two ospreys nesting in Finland, and they both have a lot of dark color on their necks and breasts.

haven't read the rest of the comments , maybe this is there, but the eagle nest cam has watched an egg being laid.

...it's also a live cam somewhere around Humboldt Bay, northern calif.

Here's the Ustream Humboldt Bay live Eagle nest Camera:

but I can't see any eggs so far. Eagles nest so much earlier on the east coast; wonder why they start so late out here. I'll bet they are already sitting on eggs in Alaska. Must have something to do with the food supply. Expecting rain here for the next two days; hunker down, Mrs. Eagle!

        Mad River.

They have wire strung all over, but the Ospreys were getting in there, as do the bears, and a Green Heron.

In spite of the wires strung around, MsBee and SIL saw Ospreys in there as well as the Green Heron.

Their website says 'opportunities for bird watching...'  hmmm.

You know of more Osprey nests up there?... sister probably can see that one at the Cookhouse, she's lives around the bend...well..near by.

        •  Hike on the Willamette River (2+ / 0-)

I MUST get up there to see these birds.  So beautiful.  I have had an Osprey circling over my head on a hike along the Willamette River.  I had binoculars so I could confirm the distinct markings.  Have also seen Bald Eagles on this river while dining at Spaghetti Factory right outside the WINDOWS.  Such beautiful creatures.  Thanks for bird watching tips.
