  •  I'm not torn - (21+ / 0-)

I'm not gay and I have alway believed in the humanity of other people and their right to be with whoever they want.  I am completely unimpressed with Portman and his family.  Completely unimpressed.  Makes me dislike him even more.  Sorry - I tend to hold grudges.

I've been coming to DKos since May 2008 and I still don't have a sig line. Oh well.....

      •  Me too (0+ / 0-)

I see absolutely no difference between this, and the family of hardcore anti-choicers who show up on the other side of the sidewalk just once with their daughter in tow. I'm glad Portman saw the light; but if it hadn't affected him personally, it's perfectly clear he never would have.

    •  I think that condemning people's motives ... (6+ / 0-)

in why they change their minds on important issues, while understandable, is also counterproductive.

Would you prefer he be consistent and kick his son out of his life on principle? Would you like him better for that?

I'm guessing no. So, he wasn't going to get you to like him, nor do I think that was necessarily his motivation. He has hardly gotten me to like him, but I am still glad to see him change his mind and have another voice for change on this issue in the Senate.

Perhaps it is because I am empathetic, and sheesh, I was anti-gay rights in the past. So, if I can change my thinking for my reasons I have to accept that he can. Perhaps my reasons were more empathy and understanding rather than the obvious personal gain. But still. People do change their thinking, and that's often a positive.

I just listened to Jonathan Capehart (on Chris Matthews' Hardball) talk about his life and how his family came to grips with his being gay.  I guess if gays and lesbians can welcome a change of heart by someone like Portman, I can too.  Still hate the fact that Republicans have empathy and understanding only for themselves and their own - and feel no differently about Portman - can't stand him.
