Lots of teenagers get depressed about things in general. It's not necessarily because they're questioning their sexuality. Lots of gay teenagers date with the opposite sex because they're in denial. If you're thinking of other clues like "he doesn't like football" or "he likes brightly colored clothes," then remember that 1) those are stereotypes, and 2) some straight kids fit them too.

And all that is without the added caveat that Sen. Portman and his wife probably believed with all their hearts that homosexuality was a choice. And heaven knows no son of theirs would ever make such a choice...

Yeah, I could easily see him never realizing his son was gay without his being out of touch with his family.

Certaines personnes disent qu'il y a une femme à blâmer, Mais je sais que c'est ma faute sacrément.

My point was not that Portman should have known with certainty his son's sexual orientation.  My point is that an intelligent, caring parent should -- and this is my opinion -- engage with their children, believe whatever they care to believe, but ALWAYS realize that what they're seeing may not correspond to reality.  If it is now so important to Portman that his son says he's gay -- Portman should have always realized that this was a possibility.  Whether his son dated girls, wore bright clothing, loved football -- whatever.  His son might be gay, his lovely daughter might have a drinking or drug problem, his beautiful wife may be two weeks from a horrible diagnosis, his parents may have blown through their savings on a wild Vegas weekend, etc. etc. etc.  Even more to the point -- a caring, intelligent politician should realize that bad things happen to good people, bad things happen to bad people, good things happen to bad people, etc. etc. etc. -- and give a good goddamn for ALL his constituents, not just the well-off, lucky, outwardly OK ones who happen to share his religious or other beliefs.
