      Say you committed a victimless crime, say, felony possession of marijuana.  

      On one hand, you've demonstrated that you have no respect for the law, so why should society trust you with following gun laws?

      On the other hand, everyone has a right to self defense.

      A violent offender presents a more clear danger with a gun, they have a track record of hurting people.  A nonviolent offender only has trouble following directions.

      I think a violent criminal has a better chance of using a gun for intentional violence.  A nonviolent criminal has a better chance of messing up and hurting somebody unintentionally.  Yet they both should have the right of self defense...

      cognitive dissonance, I have it for this facet of the issue :(
