    converted his operations at his various landholdings to breeding farms per se, but his writings clearly indicate that selling slaves that had been born of his current slaves were as lucrative, if not more so than his other operations.

      and was very interested in genetics as seen in his gardening and breeding horses; it is natural extension that he would apply this to his slaves.  After all, his own children by Sally Hemings were not freed until after his death.  We also know many men of the time did not consider Africans to be fully human and even most abolitionists did not foresee a day when there would be intermarriage
