    and generations of your family have lived in the South, there is probably slavery in your family's background, and probably Confederate soldiers in your family tree.

    I did Ancestry.com, and it didn't take me long to find my great great grandparents' census reports, and the number of slaves they "owned", and that they were CSA veterans. This is something that is hard to come to terms with, especially the slave-holding history.

    •  one great uncle was killed in 1862 (4+ / 0-)

      and 5 great uncles in another lineage died, one each year and all in one family (2 sons survived) Tracing back my 4 grandparents' lineages

      However, this area was not one for plantations, being more a frontier area at the time so there are no slaveholders in my family tree.  I examined the roster for the county and found no slaveholders though I am sure their racial views would shock me today as I assume they were all "men of their time"
