I'm in favor of traffic laws that obtain to automobiles and motorcycles, and a more expansive (NOT identical) set of laws that govern bicyclists. If there's any hope for cities and towns becoming livable again, such hope will include the assumption that walking is always okay.
      •  Q: So you oppose jay walking laws? A: YES!! (0+ / 0-)

So the "advanced civilization" on Planet Earth has become so stupid that we can't look left, right, and then left again before crossing the street?

We can only do cross the street between arbitrary painted white lines?

        Give me a break.

        •  But what about those who purposefully walk (0+ / 0-)

          in front of vehicle traffic?

And before you get on your high horse, think back about the times you have been angered by a pedestrian willfully walking in front of your car forcing you to stop.

And as you don't know me, I should tell you that I am an architect and planner that fully supports the New Urbanism movement (including SmartCode).

But that doesn't mean that it should be a free-for-all on city streets. Vehicle traffic needs to move at design speeds too in order for a city to function. Pedestrians wantonly blocking that flow make for a worse environment.

If there is no traffic, by all means - jaywalk. I occasionally do it myself. But this talk of no jaywalking laws is ignorant.

People out in the middle of street disrupting traffic should be cited for obstructing traffic.

But the idea that a person gets cited for crossing the street not between 2 arbitrary painted white lines, even when carefully looking both ways to make sure no traffic is coming, is ridiculous.
