During occupy's height I had the privilege of being able to spend a few hours having a conversation with retired Philadelphia police captain Ray Lewis. He spent most of our interview talking about the way in which the police recruitment tests have been modified to exclude individuals who express empathy. He considered this one of the most dangerous things to happen to our modern day police force. After multiple encounters with NYPD,CPD,Metro PC & having personal experiences with cops slamming me against a van for "walking to close" to the curb I can attest this is a very real problem. The worst experience I ever had with the police was not when I was actually arrested, but during the 2004 RNC convention in NYC.

I was crossing the street and 5 or 6 cops pulled up to the red light. One cop kept going and almost ran over my foot. I jumped back & said "Watch out man." (I am pretty polite in person). The cop then got off his bike, told me to get on the ground, and put my hands behind my back. I said "you got to be kidding me?!" He then proceeded to pull out his gun, place it to my temple and said "I said down fucker". I got on my knees in the middle of the street with a gun pressed against my face and my guitar strapped to my back. Cars started honking behind the officers and none of them moved or questioned what this guy was doing to me.

He then told me to put my fucking face on the ground and was taking out his cuffs when an officer not in his motorcade asked him what he was doing and why he was doing it when the guy didn't come up with an answer the other cop told me to get up & keep walking. I'm mixed but for all society cares I'm "white" and if something like that can happen to someone who is fluent in English & polite - how the hell do police treat people of color? Well maybe race doesn't matter as much - but class does.

President Obama would have been a republican in the 1980's & 1990's. Go figure.
