  •  Repeat victimization is actually not uncommon (0+ / 0-)

especially among women who are sexually abused as girls. Abuse in childhood so erodes a developing child's boundaries and sense of bodily integrity that it can leave them extremely vulnerable as they grow into women. The teenage years can be especially precarious-risky to begin with (the average age of a rape victim in the US is 17) and you add to that disrupted development, the self-destructive tendencies that so many survivors adopt (i.e. substance abuse), low self esteem, and many other issues that are often the result of childhood trauma, and it creates the perfect storm. It can ultimately become recurring cycle of multiple, repeated trauma. The data on this is pretty compelling-I don't have the link off hand but I believe there was a study that showed 81% of female incest victims were subsequently raped as adolescents and adults.

I have spoken with many CSA survivors, because of my advocacy and because I'm a survivor myself and I go to group therapy weekly. And I am not exaggerating when I say that the vast majority of us were sexually violated multiple times subsequent to and separate from the childhood abuse-and 2 times is on the low end of the spectrum. Most have no idea that this is common, and go through life thinking there is just something inherently wrong with them. Most are afraid to even talk about it, because they fear they won't be believed, and/or they think they must have brought it on themselves somehow.

Either way, they know they will be judged. And the response to Ashley Judd's disclosure unfortunately just confirms those fears are legitimate.
