    Part of denial is the conservation of mental and physical energy during trauma and initial response to trauma.

    At its core is tunnel vision (literally and figuratively) as the target of the attack tries to understand what is actually happening.

    It's the same underlying phenomenon when a person can't initially feel the pain after a traumatic injury.

    The stress hormones that prepare the body to fight or flee also inhibit high level cognitive decision making. It takes removal to a safe environment, and time in a safe environment before a victim can begin to regain their confidence in their ability to preceive and think straight.

    Predators and law enforcement, and our culture relies on that lag to push the blame onto the victim.
