Moved to Denver in about 1972 or so, and moved to Topeka six or eight years ago. That's the only organization that runs pro and Club road races, Solo Events (Autocross) road Rallies and such across the country. SCCA Here

I belong to Colorado Region and have been racing for 45+ years, in cars we build ourselves and maintain. But there is money in this part of the sport too. And it's an axiom that you can spend a fortune on a special car and if you're not skilled as a driver, it sucks to be you.

We (Colorado Region and Colorado Motorcports Assn) recently built a whole new facility in Byres, Colorado, just east of Denver - High Plains Raceway

So, yes, mostly they are private cars, but converted to road racing with safety equipment (extensive) and performance mods - Some are purpose built Formula cars and/or Street Muscle cars (ever hear of Trans-Am or Can-Am? - those are SCCA trademarks, they invented those classes), but many are street sedans, or sports cars and the level of competition is fierce in many classes.

Years ago one car I built was a Formula C Car powered by a Honda 1100cc 6 cyl 24 valve CBX Motorcycle Engine that shifted at 11,500 RPM, made about 135hp and weighed about 800lbs, a precursor to what is now an established class. Won 2d In Division in that car.

Without geometry, life is pointless. And blues harmonica players suck.

    •  This race was at an old airfield in (0+ / 0-)

Hutchinson, Kansas, IIRC.  Probably sometime in the early 90's.  Very hot the first day, nicer the second.  I've thought it might be nice to go do it again someday, but not sure I'll get to.  May just have to see if my friend's company is doing anything within local driving distance.

I've got another friend who occasionally runs laps and I think he's done it on your racetrack.

Did you see my post about a gathering for Colorado Kossacks?

many years ago, driving an English Merlyn open Sports Racer (mini can-am car). It was a kinda rainy day, and of course a very flat track (airfields are boring). So I was coming into a particular corner with some standing water (SCCA doesn stop for rain) and two fast dueling Corvettes came up behind me, split around me, and each threw up a wall of water as we all hit the puddle and drowned me in the cockpit. Engine kept running, but I was drenched and could hardly see out of my helmet...  good times!...
