  •  Quick question (5+ / 0-)

What are your thoughts on the MarsOne project (http://mars-one.com/...), if you haven't already written about it? I'm curious as to whether a project this ambitious is viable in the near future.

Republicans are far more socialist than Democrats. Just because they want to redistribute the wealth upwards does not make it any better.

    •  Mars One doesn't have financial backing. (8+ / 0-)

Which means, essentially, it won't happen - not in that particular incarnation.  Not having the money would make a $50M venture with merely innovative technology unlikely to succeed.  Human colonization of Mars is a $50B venture requiring a straight-vertical learning curve.

Inspiration Mars, however - the two-person flyby stunt venture - is about a $1B venture and has $100M in funding via Dennis Tito.  There's still no guarantee it will be able to get the rest in time for the 2018 launch window, but $100M invested in the project will still be massively stimulative to the entire field.
