YOU are the one most likely to bake on a year-long journey to Mars.  According to the same Little Brother referenced above, the in-joke at NASA about Tito's mission to Mars is whether the astronauts will arrive medium or well-done.  At best estimates, the outside human life expectancy outside of the Earth's magnetic fields is six months without shielding far too heavy to practically lift up from Earth.  We're nowhere near solving this one, although current suggestions lie mainly along the line of scavenging and manufacturing the majority of the resources in space.

    •  That's just plain false. (0+ / 0-)

The Tito plan has been rigorously reviewed by experts, including some within NASA, who say it's doable.

Ask me if I'm afraid. I say, "Of course not. I'm a fool, and fools never die."

No doubt there are different cliques within NASA; there are multiple competing centers and that doesn't start to deal with the differences between scientists, engineers, and management/accounting.  He just told me that it was a current office joke while we were discussing an asteroid-capture project he's working on.  He is clearly not in favor of manned projects, which he considers a waste of resources.
