  •  David Brooks (I know, I know) actually (9+ / 0-)

had something interesting to say about this here.

He talks about what he calls "brutality cascades" where the most brutal players set the terms of the competition or debate. We can see examples of this all over as the companies which are the most brutal to their employees and customers succeed. Where gangsters have learned that shoot first is always the wining strategy. In right wing media where lunatic spittle-flecked screaming is considered to be the fine art of debate. Where torture, "preemptive" war and other atrocities are considered heroic and acceptable.

"He pulls a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way." - Sean Connery, The Untouchables

I have become what I have beheld and I am satisfied that I have done right!" - Kevin Costner, ibid.

It is the headlong rush to be just as brutal, just as opportunistic, just as evil as your opponent which drives every civilization back into ruin and barbarism. Coddling the most brutal rich, celebrating evil, convincing ourselves that our worst instincts are our most necessary ones. It's what destroyed the Romans. It's what destroyed the British. It's what will destroy America.

And all of these derive from right wing ideology, the pathology of extreme narcissism and selfishness, greed, pride, lust, willful ignorance, jingoism, and all the other sins manifest so clearly among the conservative hive-mind.

Not that our side is pure as the driven snow. But to really create hell on earth and collapse civilization requires conservatism.

But your comments are even better.

I think President Obama has fallen into one of these brutality cascades where he has decided he has to be seen as willing to pitch a few victims onto the pyre in order to prove his trading bonafides to the barbarians who want to burn down the whole village.

Fine with everyone except for the ones being led to the pyre and those of us watching who think human sacrifice has now been legitimized.

    •  the religion that wins (0+ / 0-)

is the one that kills the most infidels

Christianity, Islam - & maybe the Scientologists (though they seem to prefer lawsuits to outright murder)
