    about the slow pace of cancer research (and in many respects, rightly so).

    Well, consider that the country invests about $4 billion a year in basic cancer research (the NCI budget) to confront something that kills about half a million Americans a year but about 300 times more ($1,200 billion) to chase terrorism phantoms that most years don't kill or otherwise harm any Americans.

    One could say that our country's priorities are hugely misplaced.
