    were dominated by state sanctioned and chartered monopolies enforced by the government, at least in Europe. In the US, the sanction for monopolies was less formal, but had government military backing against counter-claims for legitimacy by organizations of workers.

    I dare say, there probably hasn't been a free market since the Babylonian Empire fell.

    You're right, that Socialism was a philosophy developed to overcome the abuses of Carnivore Capitalism; thus the anger and resentment pointed at Socialists -- they are heretics from the Capitalist dogma of social darwinism (another concept developed in the 19th century, in answer largely to the Social Gospel).
