  •  That was deliberate (7+ / 0-)

and aimed at those of us who were fans of the TV show (watched while it was shown the first time) and had campaigned to keep it on the air and/or for the film.   Roddenberry planned to make it a very long shot.

The very first experimental NASA shuttle was named Enterprise because of the input of Star Trek fans.

Once I saw the Enterprise in the film, I felt right at home.  The long shot interlaced with the expressions of the original crew were worth it IMHO.

There already is class warfare in America. Unfortunately, the rich are winning.

    •  lol like something can't be deliberate, but stupid (0+ / 0-)

My parents always talk about how awful that scene was in theaters. Their audience was openly jeering by the end.

... and I was ecstatic when TMP came out -- a bunch of us went the very day it opened.

It was, in a word, ponderous.  We were very sad.

But we comforted ourselves with the thought it was just a case of, "Okay, we've got to get a few things out of the way," and The Wrath of Khan was everything we ever hoped a ST movie would be.

Of course III was kinda tedious ... sigh ... but then there was IV ...  :-)

      Nothing's perfect.

      BTW: happy birthday, William Shatner!
