View Diary: For the GOP, all sequestration cuts are conspiracies (61 comments)

  •  I hear you, but WH tour closing was a standalone. (0+ / 0-)

And standing alone, it looks peevish and mean.

    Optics count, here. A lot.

We could have the sequester with us for a long time. (See Senate action today.) The House Republican caucus will not weep. Instead, whenever a constituent stands up at a town meeting or makes a call to the office, the Republican Senator or Representative will blame everyone in the known universe but themselves. They didn't design it. They wouldn't have done it this way. Why, they didn't want this way. It was the President's idea. Etc.

The White House will have to be much smarter than this decision indicates about how it explains what will be a series of obvious and very painful announcements. The Executive branch will be out there all alone smacking down the public, government employees and programs. The GOP will just push back with the SOS. The sequester itself may be automatic, but the choice of what, when, how and who to announce cannot be. That better be direct, simple and compelling.

There'll be enough blame to go around for everyone.

2014 IS COMING. Build up the Senate. Win back the House : 17 seats. Plus!

Were more important than the security staff (police and Secret Service agents)?

WH plainly stated that the tour stoppage was to be able to keep necessary security in place. I'm sorry, but I rate keeping the President safe over being able to look around the public areas.

Lots of the cuts are petty -- THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE -- the whole sequester is political theater, and I've reached the point where I don't think either side of the problem cares.

BTW, I'll take people getting a paycheck over a White House tour any day.

      •  Exactly right. (0+ / 0-)

Especially when cancelling the tours not only preserves critical Secret Service functions, it makes their job a little bit easier by removing any security concerns over tourists. The GOP idea of doing the opposite would magnify threats against President Obama by making the White House less secure, not only through reductions in Secret Service protection, but by leaving a gaping hole in security.

      •  Not saying that at all, Moon. (0+ / 0-)

I'll take people staying on the payroll, too.

It's about timing and optics. These two things matter a lot on the sequester and for 2014. AS "for a lot of the cuts are petty, 8% in domestic spending cuts is not petty. Neither is even just 2% on health care. (I am, for one, delighted with the cutting and slashing the military as to do, although it will be very artful at it.)
