        ... well, there isn't one, because it is indefensible.  The CPI model for the elderly is higher than regular CPI, not lower, because the substitutions for things like ever-cheaper electronic devices that chaining relies on don't figure into most elderly SS recipients' budgets.  Health care costs do, and they're going up fast.  So does food, and that's going up almost as fast.

        The only hope for Democrats in 2014 is to run against Obama on Social Security.  To adopt Nancy Pelosi's slogan in the halcyon Bush years:  "Democrats have a plan for Social Security.  It's called Social Security."  Will they do that?  Not if the DSCC and the D-Trip don't let them.

        If Democrats break with the president on Social Security cuts, that might finally start the schism in the party between traditional Democrats and the latter-day neoliberal DLC types now in charge.  That schism, and the ultimate victory of the traditionalists, is the only hope for the ultimate survival of the party.  The more moderate-Republicanny Democrats get, the more screwed we'll all be as long as the insane Birchers are the only alternative.
