I read that book so long ago that I don't remember it much.

I'm not familiar with history throughout Polynesia; however as to Hawaiian history, the monarchy owned all the land and all other property; the common people were subjects of the monarchy, and not allowed to own property. The reasons for private property notions are not so benign.

as all his works are, he just ingratiates a tale to make History palatable.

that, I believe, both Veblen and Engels used, is also an interesting read.

As well Howard Zinn's excellent bit of American history:

Your diary made me think of the opening chapter of the latter and how the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean were treated by the early arriving Spanish.

Wanted: New sig line. Must be insightful with a good sense of humor. Non-smoking, no pets.

Morgan's Ancient Society. Morgan's three stages would be more easily remembered than the multi-stages developed by psychologist Steven Pinker in The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence has Declined.

Pinker's book identifies six evolutionary stages (if i remember the number correctly). Hopeful.

Different families and family groups view different kinds of items as either personal or communal property -- in our house, umbrellas were considered communal and you might wind up with any umbrella on a rainy day.  Ponchos were communal.

In one house I lived in, in college, cars were considered communal property, belonging to "the house" rather than to any one person in them, because their owners had abandoned them upon graduation.  If all the cars were gone, and you needed a ride, you just called the local pizza parlor and -- for the price of a pizza delivery, they would give you a ride.  Two bucks minimum, more if you had it.

And then there's open source software!  And creative commons media!
