  •  Our mailman (17+ / 0-)

hands out treats and stops to talk to the dogs so they know him. He says it not only reduces barking and being bitten or nipped but he has also found people's dogs loose in the neighborhood (escapees) and brought them home. Both our dogs love our mailman already. Bit takes them out to see him every day he runs.

Our girl barks when he heads up the walk, but her tail is wagging fast enough to propel a boat.  She knows he will leave her a treat with the mail.

When one of is home and present at the moment he is delivering, we let her out to greet him.  They're like old friends meeting at the grocery store. She circles him with leaps and jumps, he laughs and knees down for a lick/kiss.  It's a lovely sight.

And just one more reason I get so pissed off every time I think of what the GOP is trying to do to the mailmen/women of this country--outsource their jobs to a for profit carrier. And btw, never saw a Fed-ex guy pay a lick of attention to our dog either way.

That Fed-ex person doesn't pass through our gate and up our walk every day. Doesn't know our neighborhood and all the dogs there, or give a lick about it. And costs a lot more for the privilege of his disconnection.

AFL-CIO.  There's going to be a support gathering outside of post offices across this country this Sunday sponsored by the AFL-CIO.  Any local union should have information on the location and times.

Thanks for supporting the Postal Service.

but vital function mail carriers have is keeping an eye out for elderly and disabled folks. A lot of people have been saved, or sadly, found when it was too late, by an astute mail carrier who realizes s/he hasn't seen someone in a while and checks.

and how blissfully old fashioned in this new world where community is discounted.
