  •  I think you have the US confused with (6+ / 0-)

a representative democracy. We are not. We are a delagatory democracy. We do not elect people to represent our interests, although they may promise to do things we agree should be done when campaigning. We elect people to whom to delegate our franchise.

We elect officials to study the issues and substitute their opinion for ours. The 'will of the American people' as expressed in polls, letters to the editor, what have you, are only one part of the many things an elected politician takes into consideration when voting on issues in our name.

So, yeah, if they miss this opportunity to revamp our ridiculous open-season gun laws, it definitely is on them. They have the votes that count. The 'will of the American people' does not.

...that they look out the window at their constituents in their various camps and say to themselves:  "Which vote will hurt my chances for re-election?"

Or, do they say:  "Forget about them. I'll vote my personal opinion."

Do they vote with the lobbyist that seduced them the best?

Do they vote with their caucus across the board?

Do they bend over under the party whip?

You know, since America does not have a government based on representative democracy -- it has to be one or more of the above.
