      catch?

Sometimes they get delayed, so even if they appear to not go through, a page refresh reveals that they actually do.

That happens to me relatively frequently.

          •  Do you remember connecting with an analog modem? (3+ / 0-)

I remember trying to remotely diagnose computers with an analog modem connection. There was more than one of us working on the problem at the same time.

When you got noise on the line, random characters would start showing up in your receive box.

The square root character always seemed to show up: √

The office tradition was to call out, "I'm getting free radicals!" whenever this happened.

Ya wanna talk old? Meteor Blades will tell you about the older versions.

...the DSDD floppies. We were lucky in that all of our original 5150's came with them. Of course, only one came with a 20 MB hard drive originally, but then we got 20 MB HardCards for the other 2. We got 9 years of use out of those old machines.

...first six machines had only a single drive slot. And they cost a fortune to do 1% of what your watch can do now.

We've come quite a ways, and yet there's a lot of excess "stuff" that crowds computers these days.

If it's a long-ass comment, copy it to the clipboard, just in case.

If it stalls and appears to have vanished, refresh.

Even then, it can STILL manage to happen: on one occasion, it "stalled", so I refreshed twice, still no comment. Closed the browser tab, reopened the page in a new one, still no comment. So I retyped it, thinking it was indeed truly lost. Refreshed the page afterwards...guess what?

          Two friggin comments. Go figure.
