  •  $3 BILLION US Taxpaid Church Subsidies (8+ / 0-)

Every year the US government gives the Catholic Church $3 BILLION to subsidize its charity work. Then there's the many $BILLIONS the public pays in taxes instead of the Church paying those taxes.

In a direct and undeniable way in the US alone, the pope's policies on how his charities operate directly affect what US taxpayers spend on, instead of on something else - when we don't have $3B extra to spare.

Then there's the actual effect of those operations. How many of them give a person a fish instead of teaching them to fish? How many of them teach a person to have families they can't support, to ignore logic and evidence, to merely pray for a better life after death instead of tomorrow or for their children? Not just in America, but around the world - where poverty is the biggest driver of bad things that eventually hurt America.

And there's the power that the Church exercises in getting legislation. Gay equality, women's equality, women's health...

Oh, and then there's the child rape. How about that? If the pope hasn't turned over to the police in dozens of countries its evidence of thousands of child rapists it's hidden, then he's continuing the child raping. And I mean turn them over by May, which is a generous amount of time. Protecting child rape affects all of us.

As if that weren't enough, the main reason Ratzinger resigned is that the Vatican banking and related administration is really corrupt, to the point of being blackmailed. That corruption has direct effects, as the Vatican banking network is a cesspool that underwrites all kinds of global crimes. Which either are directly commited in the US, or which the US must spend time and money (and sometimes lives) policing - or joining in corruption.

The Church is a globally integrated org, with special powers even beyond its vast wealth and numbers. If it doesn't reform to live up to its "sacrifice yourself to help the poor" propaganda, it will continue to reinforce the same corruption that harms us by oligarchy overall.
