    your discussion, and I was prompted for some reason to zero in on the chestnut backed chickadee. Someone, in a comment in a bucket diary, mentioned to me that I could not have seen a black-capped chickadee in Santa Rosa, CA when I lived there. I stood corrected, and agreed that it must have been a mountain chickadee out of its usual habitat. But today, when looking at the question again, I found a Santa Rosa Chestnut Backed Chickadee without the chestnut, and now I am sure that was the bird that lived in my yard in Santa Rosa. I didn't get a pic of it back then, but here is one I found online:

    This little guy was photographed at Lake Ralphine in Santa Rosa, which is just up the street from where I lived, on September 11, 2012. A bunch of these aberrant guys fed at my feeders year round there.

    New note: the famous Loch Garten osprey, EJ (of EJ and Odin) has returned from Africa to her regular nest in Scotland, today. The Brits are celebrating, big time!
