  •  Dole represents the old school (5+ / 0-)

of the Republican Party that would fight back and forth and then [sometimes] come to agreements.

Today's Republican Party never comes to agreements on anything. They want to impose their extremist versions of religion and corporate rule in place of democracy.

Eisenhower did not like SSI or Medicare - but he realized that the will of the people was overwhelming, and that the role of government was to serve the desires of the people.

Ike viewed the extreme right as an over reaction:

Now it is true that I believe this country is following a dangerous trend when it permits too great a degree of centralization of governmental functions. I oppose this — in some instances the fight is a rather desperate one. But to attain any success it is quite clear that the Federal government cannot avoid or escape responsibilities which the mass of the people firmly believe should be undertaken by it. The political processes of our country are such that if a rule of reason is not applied in this effort, we will lose everything — even to a possible and drastic change in the Constitution. This is what I mean by my constant insistence upon "moderation" in government.

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

Dole was not quite as alarmed as Ike, until his recent trip to DC.

Now he's become a bit more aware.

Republicans totally abandoned conservatism in the 1980s ..

    •  What did those allegedly "decent" and "sane" (0+ / 0-)

conservatives think would be substantially better than these programs, a pony? Two ponies? A boatfull of ponies? That's the thing about conservatives, they're always complaining about how things are but never explain how they could make thing better, except with vague magical thinking solutions akin to a perpetual motion machine. It's time we stopped calling them conservatives and started calling them delusional fools who have an unhealthy relationship with reality. Were they born this way or was it their upbringing?

Think Tucker Carlson. You don't know whether to slap him or medicate him.
