  •  I voted for "ineffectiveness of current methods (4+ / 0-)

of protest" in the poll.  The other options are true also but doing something about that issue or any significant issue seems the important thing to focus on.  At least for me.  I already know about the corruption, money talks bullshit walks.  Protests don't work, not for major issues like the pipeline or wars or most anything where the big money dogs lie.  What does work?  Money works, the lobbies have proven that in buying the politicians.  Guarantees for revolving door jobs work, threats to destroy careers work.  If we could figure out how to do that stuff, then we could make some progress.   We should be amenable to try about anything at this point.   National referendums aren't a bad idea.  I think they can be done, not sure of the process but some groups are working on that.  We can vote to legalize marijuana in separate states but can't nationally.  That makes no sense to me.   The main argument against (by the so called liberals/progressives) is they don't trust the results.  That doesn't make sense either, not when they do trust the results of statewide measures and not when the political system is so corrupted. I think some of that is misinformation to prevent such a thing from occuring.

Needs an "all of the above" option.

    •  we do need to do something about the... (7+ / 0-)

larger issue of not being able to have our dissent count for anything.  when public opinion turns against drug wars or, for that matter, shooting wars, or a new healthcare privatization provision scheme that rewards rent-seeking 1%ers, we should be able to capitalize on that and make changes, but our methods haven't been working due to the corruption of the system by big money.

perhaps we need to short-circuit the system by creating an alternative system of economic exchange that makes their money irrelevant.

Why do the politicians need money ? To buy TeeVee ad time. Election season is to the networks as Xmas is to retail. What if we weren't watching ? What if we were reading and talking to each other ? What if TeeVee ads meant nothing ? My vote is not for sale 'cuz I don't give a damn who has the most ads.

The free market is not the solution, the free market is the problem.

to create our own currency and system of exchange than to get average people to stop watching their damned teevees.
