  •  The story of Abraham teaches us that thinking (4+ / 0-)

    critically is bad.

Think about it, Abraham is asked to show his love to god by killing his son. To make the ultimate sacrifice simply for being asked, and not to question why. God has his reasons.

The devil tries to introduce critical thinking and convince Abraham that he doesn't have to do it, THREE TIMES!  Abraham, the faithful hero in this story, resists the evil "temptation" to question authority and eschews him by throwing stones at him. (This is relived every year during the Hajj, where people throw stones at three pillars who pretend to be the devil).

So, the devil is the bad guy because he encouraged Abraham to think about the insane proposition of killing and suggest he shouldn't have to do it just to show his devotion.

This moral of the story is that utter obedience and devotion is much more admirable than questioning authority. The devil is evil because he encourages Abraham to question God's orders.

This is why we don't encourage critical thought in this country, and why it is on the decline.

"If you don't sin, then Jesus died for nothing!" (on a sign at a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans)
