  •  Ford and Kennedy.... (0+ / 0-)

The post mentions that the carrier Gerald Ford is under construction at at an estimated cost of $12 billion.

But work has already begun on yet another carrier -- the John F. Kennedy. God knows how much that will end up costing.

These ships have an estimated service lives of 40-50 years, so there is the additional cost of maintenance and repair over 50 years.

    •  ...and don't be confused... (4+ / 0-) the headline on this post. The Navy is NOT arguing against  new bajillion dollar ships. The post refers to one lonely captain writing an article about the subject. I doubt there is a single serving admiral in the Navy who is actually arguing against new carriers.

Oh, and planning is underway for yet another new carrier, to be called the Enterprise.

    •  USS JFK probably will be less (0+ / 0-)

The Ford, as the lead ship in the class and with a brand new reactor to boot, was far more prone to cost overruns than the Kennedy will be, most likely.
