the USN to utilize smaller, cheaper carriers.  No need for the big flattops when the plane can land vertically.  The US probably only needs about 5 big flattops, and could rely on a larger number of smaller carriers for routine patrols and policing.

The people working on and testing the F-35 are very enthusiastic about it (I've spoken to some of them personally), so it will be a great aircraft.

As for the survivability of the flattops, only an all-out war with a first-rate opponent (NOT Iran) would threaten them.

On a personal note, I am opposed to war in principle, but sometimes there is no good alternative.  Iraq & A'stan?  A waste of time and resources.  Somali piracy, on the other hand, should be ruthlessly suppressed.

is a boondoggle.  And the navy version still has so many bugs that it is completely unworkable, unlike the land based versions that are just 99.9% unworkable and overpriced.

I am not religious, and did NOT say I enjoyed sects.
