  •  Here in AZ, we've seen this train wreck coming (12+ / 0-)

for decades, starting back in the 80s when we became the poster child for charter schools. Our Sec. of Ed. at the time, Lisa Graham Keegan, cared more about private schools than the old public variety; she ended up advocating the same for GWB's administration. I wrote a lot of editorials, articles, and books about this topic way before we had this nifty blog thing, but we can see how well my cautions worked! We're among the most privatized and least successful states when it comes to education. Don't tell me the two aren't connected!

But it's systemic—schools, prisons, fire and police, any public service! These so-called reformers want to push the public out and rake the profits in.

My agency tried to work with him when he was at the ed dept. What a jerk. And he's continued his jerk-dom as AG. .

        •  yeah, I know - (4+ / 0-)

somehow his lack of ethics does not seem to bother people in AZ.  Remember, he did same joint MBA-JD program as Romney, a bit before Mitt, and in Tom's case after Harvard College as an undergraduate.  HE was simultaneously running an investment business that led to his being permanently barred by the SEC from the industry -  IIRC it was a consent agreement to keep him from being prosecuted.

His recent personal misconduct and his less than candor about it should surprise no one, given his history.

What is interesting is that when he moved to AZ - which he once explained to us was a choice about where a Jewish kid without connections and money could get to Congress, and his second choice was Alaska! - he was, according to Rep. Ed Pastor, a very active member of Young Dems.

I knew he was losing it when he and his family were in DC during the Reagan administration's first term and I took them on a tour and then bought them dinner - I have known him a long time, and he had hosted me in his home when I had previously been in Phoenix on business ) - and he asked me in all seriousness if the Sandinistas would be coming across the border in Harlingen TX  (remember that Conservative canard?).

When he ran for his educational slot, he opted out of the clean finance law and dumped tons of money from his trial lawyer practice into his race (he had been in DC for annual meeting of ATLA).   Given his conservative - even wing-nut - Republican orientation now, I wonder, does he attack trial lawyers like the rest of that ilk do?

          •  Here in Florida (0+ / 0-)

lawyers don't have to chase ambulances, they can place their ad on vehicles used to transport disabled people.

In some places, elected officials are held in higher esteem than trial lawyers so elected office can be considered a step up in one's career.
