  •  I have Retirement Funds (8+ / 0-)

but not a 401K.  I also get a very small teacher's pension for 15 years of teaching.  While it's not much, it pays my part of medicare and our family health insurance.  My husband has always been a private painting and dry wall contractor so he pays both ends of his s.s., not to mention workman's compensation. and obviously has no 401K.  We bought real estate to provide a pension for him and paid for it even in the years we had no ostensible income (there were more than 20 of them).  We did it by borrowing from what we hoped would be income in the following years.

We're ok. All of the original real estate is paid off.  Even though we don't have jobs, we get enough from rents to provide the necessary cash flow to live comfortably if carefully.  I guess one of the things you learn to face early when you have NO SAFETY NET, is that you have to create your own. Thank god we have cheap tastes.  A good book really does give me more pleasure than drinking beer on a beach. great music gives me chills, and my car is a 1984 Benz bought used.

Anyway, that's where we are at 65 and 70.
