    It is about another world where science is done in a cloistered environment. They are called "avout" instead of "devout."

    Something happens that scares the pants off everybody. Society is forced to turn to the avout to save them.

      That may not be how the word's meant to be used, but I tend to boss my words around like Humpty Dumpty.

      I've read every novel that Stephenson wrote by himself, except Anathem. I got about 150 pages in, and stopped. I found it dense and tangled. But he writes with a lot of energy, so I'll try it again some time when I have less on my plate, and can go for the full immersion the book is asking of me.
