even tho I really like it, I liked the characters, the scenes he paints, the language use is terrific (Irish 1920ish?) and everything...so far. I am leaving it after the first third, the setup is beautiful.

But mentally I can't take it, a book where you like the characters, you know they are going to suffer and bad things will happen, and dam, I don't need that part right now.
But I totally recommend it,if you are tough enough... it is also a very sweet book as well as being very rough.

What I realized I needed was a book where an unknown victims cops it first page, the hero wraps it all up and gets the girl, and the bad guys eat it.

For that 'Shadow of the Rock' by Thomas Mogford really worked!

It is set in Gibraltar and Tangiers and the desert nearby, it really examines the emigration/immigration of North Africans to Europe via Gibraltar..as a side issue, as well as the tribal politics in Morocco, and the history of Gibraltar and the adaptations of the people over the last several hundred years.
Coincidentally I had just spent several hours with Google earth following trails and finding trails, ancient abandoned settlements and buildings, military adventures, and all manner of stuff in Morrocco. The book seems very accurate and concise, it made me want to know more, and I will be looking for his other books.
Good stuff for a who dun it.
     2 thumbz up.

I will write Shadow down.  That is neat that you could find things on Google.

This is what I love, too, about good books:

it made me want to know more
I most often need this, too:
What I realized I needed was a book where an unknown victims cops it first page, the hero wraps it all up and gets the girl, and the bad guys eat it.
If I am mentally rested I can read the things that hurt the heart, but I understand about quitting, too.

I am glad you could come by!
