is that people as smart as Obama know, or should know, that public finance is IMMENSELY elastic and can be stretched to unbelievable limits over very long stretches of time spanning generations, to deal with crises and enable shared growth and prosperity, and done right always pays for itself on the macro scale. Look at how well we've done after incurring the huge debts and deficits of our biggest wars and public investment programs. The ONLY reason a smart person goes against this is self-interest or weakness.

media (who question nothing) Obama compares the Federal budget to a family budget.
He knows that is pure hogwash but he still says it anyway which tells some people all they need to know about whose interests he represents.

So eager for easy approval and to avoid a fight, he tends to say and do things that seem intended to win over his enemies and reassure the clueless. That this does neither only makes it all the more disappointing and perplexing. He's so mediocre that way, this middling need to be anodyne and innocuous.

Cheney and Rubin have trained this one well.
