    You can have the fanciest church wedding in history, but if you don't have that piece of paper from the State, good luck trying to collect on Social Security and other benefits if something happens to your beloved, or even have the opportunity to make medical decisions for him/her. Many rituals even reflect that truth: "By the power vested in me by the State of __, I now pronounce you..."

    The ultimate solution would be what they do in some European countries, where everyone has a civil ceremony, then if they choose they can have the religious one as well (or churches could require the religious one; in the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer there's even a rite for the Blessing of a Civil Marriage).
