  •  that is an appalling story (9+ / 0-)

Let me guess: your attacker was faculty?

Over the years I've seen a few cases of sexual harassment of grads by faculty. The administration always starts by doubting and blaming the victim,  until the evidence and longstanding pattern of previous harassment is revealed and forces them to act.

    •  I've seen that, but this was a fellow grad student (36+ / 0-)

And the only reason I got to stay in school was the police observed him threatening me physically through a locked door.

I was more angry than scared, truth be told.  I understand that I'd either broken his arm or dislocated his shoulder in the preceding scuffle, and quite frankly, I'd locked myself in a lab and called the cops because I was more afraid of what I would do to HIM, than I was afraid of what he was trying to do to me.  (I'm kind of a badass, grew up with 4 brothers and 10 uncles.  We used to play-fight, wrestling mostly.)

But a woman shouldn't have to be a foul-mouthed working-class badass street fighter who has no respect for authority and will in fact calmly threaten the Dean with incarceration just to stay in school.  Sheesh!

      •  I see your point, but (4+ / 0-)

That was pretty extreme, and I admit that I'd pay money to have seen the spectacle, but the valuable Life Lessons you learned from this event were priceless: 1) Power protects Power (even and especially in academia), and 2) that sometimes being a badass is just what you need to do.

I don't know about you, but personally it's been a lifelong struggle to reconcile the difference between the way things should be with the way things are...

        •  I'm not sure I'm comfortable (5+ / 0-)

reducing an event of that magnitude to Life Lessons.

And in fact, I did not think much of it at the time.

I was totally comfortable with the outcome, and in fact delighted in tormenting the guy with telling everybody he'd been beat up by a girl.  And (he was a foreign student, European) telling him (and everybody else) that my cousin was in the FBI, in INS in fact, and then asking him how his work visa was coming along.  In front of people.

I had no mercy.  I was merciless.  I have seen worse.  And felt worse.

            But what did I learn?

That University Administrators are pussies?  Snakes? Pussy-snakes?

I could write a book, and I shall call it PUSSYSNAKES.

            What did I LEARN?

That men can be violent and some of them need to be taught a lesson?   That campus rape is a very real problem, and the victims Should Be Believed?  That perhaps this is The Reason "Why So Few" in academic science?  In engineering?  On the oil patch?

            Yah, all of that.

All the wrong lessons.  I should have learned to "Lean In" a bit honey, show some tit, show some leg.

Thank YOU, Sheryl Sandberg, for making it all so simple.

            /me rolls my eyes.
