  •  I met all four of my grandparents (10+ / 0-)

but only knew 2 of them really well.  My paternal grandmother died when I was 4 but I remember her, and I remember her wooden leg.  Like something out of a 19th c. history channel documentary, she had a straight wooden leg from the knee down.  Bizarre to think of in the mid to late 20th c., needless to say she was poor.  My dad's dad came to live with us for a short time later on, when I was about 9  or so.  He was an alcoholic and nearly burnt the house down one day, so that ended that situation.  Don't remember much about him after that, he died a year or two later I think.

My maternal grandfather was the 'strong, silent' type.  A really nice man who loved his little family.  He died when I was in my early 20's.  My maternal grandmother was from an Italian immigrant family and could cook anything.  She was gentle, kind and wise and died in 1999.  She was one of my very best friends and I really wish she were here now.

I count myself very fortunate to have had a relationship with at least one grandparent well into adulthood.  My wonderful 'grandmom' definitely helped to shape who I am today and taught me a lot about life.

Thanks for this opportunity to walk down memory lane a bit.  If I wasn't at work I could post a few cool old family photos! : )
