  •  my great grandparents- (11+ / 0-)

I have only vague memories of my great grandfather, but knew my great grandmother very well. she passed away when I was 18.

my great grandfather never gave her any money. if she said she needed to buy sheets, he'd give her the $, then she'd have to show him what she bought when she came home. I think he bought the sheets ruse because she used to lay the pasta on a sheet on top of the bed to dry? maybe that's why he thought she was always buying sheets? I don't know.

if she ever wanted to buy something for herself, instead of something for the family or for the house, she'd say she needed $ to buy sheets. then she'd bring the same unopened package of bed sheets she had stashed somewhere in the house. when she got home she'd hide whatever she bought and show my great grandfather the sheets she bought.

whenever I think of my great grandmother I hear her saying in a very thick Sicilian accent "sheets ima gonna buy." that's what she'd say when we'd ask her "what 's that you got there?" when we'd pick her up to go shopping.
