  •  I knew all four of my grandparents (12+ / 0-)

One of my great-grandfathers survived until I was a year old; a great-grandmother died when I was about seven. My dad's mom died when I was six and his dad passed away about eighteen months later. I heard little from any of them; my great-grandmother because she was just so remote, my paternal grandparents because...well, let's just say my dad's family was not a jovial one.

On the other side my maternal grandfather died when I was 15 and my grandmother lived until I was in my mid-30's. I adored both of them and they were both storytellers. I can't recall many anecdotes at this point; the one that comes to mind offhand was my grandmother telling me at one point how, when she was a kid, the gas used for heat and hot water ran on meters; her folks had to put a coin in a slot to get hot water (and these were people who, while not wealthy, were reasonably comfortable by the standards of the day).
