  •  Sadly, the actual slaughter of 6 yr olds (12+ / 0-)

hasn't awoken them to the need for some common sense reforms. I'm afraid that a what-if scenario will have no impact.

Mark Kirk's sudden understanding that rehab should be covered for stroke patients now that he had a stroke and Portman's sudden realization that banning same sex marriage will affect his son -- it's clear that unless someone in Congress has a close family member gunned down, they simply cannot understand why we should make any changes. They even had one of their own members shot!!!!! But that's not enough to persuade them that something needs to be done.

What if John Hinkley used multiple rounds, with the type of bullet that never exits the body? Their hero never would have survived that.

This won't wake up Congress -- but I hope it wakes up the parents of every student at that university. I hope they start making calls and writing letters. There but for the grace of God, go I... Those parents are one step closer to truly understanding how the Newtown parent feel and they need to join the fight.

First the thing is impossible, then improbable, then unsatisfactorily achieved, then quietly improved, until one day it is actual and uncontroversial. ... It starts off impossible and it ends up done. - Adam Gopnik

As you mention, Gabby Giffords was shot, and they didn't do jack.  (I refuse to even contemplate that they didn't do anything because she's a Democrat.)

I want a leader who shoots for the moon. The last time we had one, we got to the moon.

It took another 5 years and two more high profile assassinations before Congress was able to pass any restrictions on guns.
