    Profit motive does not work for certain industries, and that is obvious.  It was bad enough in the old days when a college faculty did not want to make waves or take chances to piss off a benefactor or lose a grant or something.

    It also amazes me how humans in their quest for profit will so often bilk others, be dishonest and disingenuous, and do whatever they can to maximize their profit.  And this attitude comes from the very top down.

      in the absence of an official profit to official owners.

      Too many state and non- profit colleges encourage students to take on large debt for degrees and do not properly disclose that their degree program will not increase their earnings ability much if at all.

      The most important way to protect the environment is not to have more than one child.
