A story my dad told, from when he was growing up in Texas:
His uncle was in the Army Air Corps, stationed in Puerto Rico, where he met the woman who would become his first wife. When news of their wedding reached the family, my dad heard certain adults proclaim, "He went and married himself a (n-word)". When said uncle returned with his bride, everyone fell in love with her, and they didn't even grouse that she'd made uncle convert to Catholicism.

Ideologies crumble in the face of humanity. If only these bigots would embrace their own humanity, maybe they'd begin to see the humanity in others too.

PrezObama's only mistake in the sequester is that he assumed that the Republicans would be more loyal to their oath of office to serve the people than their oath to Norquist to never close tax loopholes.

When I told him that my black girlfriend and I had decided to marry, he responded with a simple question and a smile:

"When you have kids, do you plan on showing your relatives the negatives?"  He never did care much one way or the other, but he did worry about the bigotry my wife and I might face.

Lucky for us, things have been pretty smooth for the most part.
