  •  Marriage wasn't even popular until (4+ / 0-)

the question of property ownership came into the picture. The RCC was concerned with women owning property and passing anything down matrilineally, so marriage.
This ideal family is such bullshit. Freakin trippers.

    •  Marriage is possibly pre-history but (3+ / 0-)

nobody wrote stuff down 8K years ago.

I liked the BBC's doc "When God was a Girl" with historian Bettany Hughes -her wiki:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/...

She sayz things were different back in neolithic and
      "matrilineally" was the norm.
90% of god statues dirt guys dig up are women.

Then she sayz Zeus comes along and everything changes.

Towards the end of this hour doc, the BBC brings you to Rome and shows an 1800 year old painting of a woman priest.

      Great doc.

      •  As a Goddess lover, I'll try to catch it, thx! (3+ / 0-)

I've read from various sources that marriage wasn't really a thing during the first 1000 years+ AD.

That's been my impression.  People just used to move in together.  If your village/community had a ritual you may or may not have performed it.  But the act of moving in together constituted commitment and marriage.

It seems to have been the growth of the Catholic church and their insistence on imposing order (under their authority) that created the idea that you had to "get married" and it had to be recognized by some authority to be authentic.
