    The U.S. Cavalry was, quite literally, invading Utah to force the people living there to a) join the Union and b ) make polygamy illegal because, well, 1st Amendment or not, we American's don't like polygamy.

    Whatever you think of the Mormon church (and I sure as hell have no use for them) what was done to them when Utah was annexed was just another example of American imperial/theocratic abuse of power.

    And this was AFTER they got chased out of every decent place in the U.S., often after some of them were murdered, their towns burned down, and so on.

    They couldn't run far enough though, even the middle of the crappiest land in North America, which was no part of the U.S. at the time they settled it, wasn't far enough to get away from the power of Protestant Christianity and the military of the U.S.A. that forced it on so many people in so many places.
