    birth certificates, marriage certificates, military discharge papers, etc.  I have had to gather papers for my mother when she became ill.  It took months in some cases, travel to Detroit twice, and plenty of money.  It is definitely not easy, and it didn't do my blood pressure any good, believe me.  I second your recommendation to get extra copies of all documentation.  And btw, if you were in the service, you will need a copy of your discharge papers when you apply for social security.
