  •  My husband's grandmther (6+ / 0-)

applied for social security back in the early days of the program.  She couldn't get a copy of her birth certificate from the state--they couldn't find record of her birth.  She never was able to get SS because of this, and had to live with her children.  When she passed away and the family was sorting through her belongings they found a copy of the birth certificate.  The spelling of her father's name was off by one letter.  No one had noticed this previously, and at that time there was nothing that could be done about it.

    •  That is so sad. Musta been hard on her (4+ / 0-)

and her children - not bad hard - just disappointing hard - everyone wants to be independent as long as they can.

So close - yet so far away - from giving the system what they need.  Seems things haven't changed much based on what I am reading and hearing.

      Thanks for sharing.

      •  I think everyone was just frustrated (4+ / 0-)

THis new program that was going to let her be independent and have a little cash, and she couldn't access it.  I think before then most elderly folks had lived with their children--or vice versa--unless they were well off enough to save for their old age.  So she probably wasn't horrified.  But still.
