  •  I believe my aunt's is messed up ... (6+ / 0-)

because my grandmother did check the birth certificate. But my grandfather didn't like the name. And since he was at the baptism and my grandmother wasn't -- this was 75 years ago, Catholic, so baby needed to be baptized ASAP and mother was in hospital for two weeks.

So, my grandfather just didn't use the name my grandmother preferred because he didn't like it. But they were Catholic, and she was baptized, so that's the name they used. It annoyed my grandmother, but the church name trumped the legal name even for my not tremendously religious grandparents.

So, I don't know what she does. Maybe she straightened out the first name when she changed to her married name. But it is an interesting sort of dilemma for some.

My first Social Security card was wrong. Added an "e" to my spelling of my name, which while not uncommon, is not how I spell my first name. I think I corrected that when I changed my last name. Then again, I'm quite sure I couldn't find my Social Security card if asked, and those are hard to get. I sort of live in fear.
